Writing children’s books is very different from writing books for adults. All children’s books have illustrations. The youngest child doesn’t easily process words without accompanying pictures. Words that rhyme particularly attract young children and older children, too.

After you’ve written a manuscript that you want to become a children’s book, try it out on children and see if they like your story. After tallying up the votes, you will be able to guess how your book will sell. If less than ¾ of the children don’t like your book, then consider revising your manuscript. Ask the children what they think should happen in the story.

Each page in a children’s book should almost read like a story by itself. The smallest children can remain interested in a story if it’s less than 10 pages long. Children like repetitive stories. You can read the same story to a child over and over again and they will never get tired of hearing that story.

Publishers may have a list of illustrators for your children’s book, but self-published manuscripts have to provide their own pictures. Some authors are also artists and that makes it easier. There are a few really good children’s book illustrators to be found right on the internet. With the new software available for writers, your children’s book can be completed and illustrated very quickly.
